While both witches and outlaws in Northern European folklore dwell at the edges of society, their solitude is not the same. The outlaw’s isolation is legal and punishing, born of exile and often tinged with suffering. The witch’s isolation, by contrast, is chosenβ€”functional, even sacred. One is cast out; the other retreats. One survives the wilderness; the other communes with it.
